Gillian Fisher

In the month before Christmas 1987, Gillian Fisher appeared as soprano soloist in over 20 performances of Handel's 'Messiah', including nine in Japan with Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, and five in Italy with 'The Sixteen'. Such a hectic schedule of engagements is not at all unusual for one of the most sought-after sopranos of her generation.

And this demand is now happily and increasingly supplied on disc, including Purcell's 'King Arthur' and 'Dioclesian' with John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir, 'The Triumph of Time and Truth' with Denys Darlow and the London Handel Orchestra, and two recent outstanding releases with the King's Consort : 'Great Baroque Arias' (including 'Let the Bright Seraphim', 'Dido's Lament', 'Sheep may safely graze', etc) and Pergolesi's 'Stabat Mater', in which she is partnered by Michael Chance, and which was critic's choice in The Gramaphone Magazine.

Gillian Fisher has appeared in many of the world's leading concert halls, including London's Royal Albert, Royal Festival and Barbican Halls, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, New York's Lincoln Centre and the Suntory Hall in Tokyo. She appears regularly at the Handel Festivals in London, England and Maryland, USA, and at the Proms.

Her frequent radio broadcasts cover the field, from the great comer-stones of the Baroque repertoire to the vocal symphonies of Darius Milhaud and she featured in several of Bamber Gascoigne's television series 'Man and his Music.' Her singing is by no means confined to the Baroque and ranges from the classical and romantic oratorios to contemporary music and mixed evenings of solos and duets alone, or with her husband, the broadcaster, conductor, chorus master of the Huddersfield Choral Society and former King's singer Brian Kay.
