Phillip McCann
Phillip McCann is one of the best-known names in the brass band
world. He was born in Bo'ness, Scotland, and first came to fame
as an outstanding cornet player. He began with the Kinniel Colliery
Band, and played principal comet with the National Youth Brass Band
of Great Britain for five years before advancing to the same position
with the world famous Black Dyke Mills Band, in 1973. He remained
with Black Dyke until 1988, and since then has maintained his reputation
as a player as principal cornet at the Leyland DAF Band as well
as the Williams Fairey Engineering Band.
He is also busy as a guest soloist and in giving master classes
with bands throughout the world. He is a member of the team of internationally
renowned instrumentalists assisting the Yamaha Corporation in the
development of their range of wind and brass instruments.
Phillip is heavily committed to teaching brass music through his
work at University of Huddersfield, Birmingham Conservatoire and
Huddersfield Technical College.
In recent years he has progressively increased his activities as
a conductor, and was the driving force behind the formation and
development of the highly successful Sellers Engineering Band from
Huddersfield, of which he is currently the Musical Director.
