DAVID
CROWTHER (Founder)
David Crowther was born and educated in Leeds where he still lives
and works. After a period of teaching in a Church School, he has,
for some years, worked in the Civil Service.
He has been a member of the Huddersfield Choral Society for 18 years
and has served on the Choir's Executive Committee for the last 10.
When in 1985 he found himself, for the first time in his life, with
some spare time, he decided the time was right to try to establish
a Choral Society Youth Choir. The Choral Society was about to celebrate
its 150th Anniversary and the Youth Choir seemed the natural progression.
He approached Kenneth Rothery and Beth Sharp to join him in the venture,
for, as he said, "I had known both Ken & Beth for many years,
we had collaborated successfully in mounting concerts for the Choral,
and I believed they were the best people for the job".
He has considerable previous experience in working with young people,
having founded and organised for 11 years a Church Youth Club with
200 members. He has also spent many hours coaching young people in
soccer, cricket and athletics.
He is immensely proud of the progress made by the Youth Choir in so
short a time and counts himself fortunate to be working with such
good-humoured and well motivated young people.
When asked about his future hopes, he said that he wanted to see the
Youth Choir pre-eminent in youth choralism and was looking forward
to watching today's talented members developing into first-class adult
singers, with many of them becoming members of the Huddersfield Choral
Society itself. |

KENNETH
ROTHERY (Conductor)
Kenneth Rothery was born in Golcar, showing an early interest in music
by singing and learning to play the piano. He taught music at Kirkburton
Secondary Modern School and then transferred to the new Middle School
when reorganisation took place.
He has been Choirmaster at Parkwood Methodist Church for 30 years
and also plays the organ there. It is now about 40 years since he
became a singing member of the Huddersfield Choral Society.
Since retiring from teaching, Ken has devoted a great deal of his
spare time to conducting. His choirs include Honley Gilbert &
Sullivan Society, Holmfirth Choral Society and the Huddersfield Choral
Society Youth Choir.
In addition to all this, he still finds time to take a weekly class
for the University of the Third Age on "Enjoying Music"
and a Music Appreciation Group at Storthes Hall Hospital. He is also
much in demand giving talks on musical subjects to various local organisations. |

BETH
SHARP (Pianist)
Beth Sharp studied at Bingley Training College, the Northern School
of Music (Manchester) and at the Royal Academy of Music, gaining her
L.R.A.M. in Piano.
She specialises in accompanying and is Deputy Accompanist - and also
a singing member - of the Huddersfield Choral Society. She is the
accompanist of the two year-old Huddersfield Choral Society Youth
Choir and often plays for the Honley Gilbert and Sullivan Society
and Holmfirth Choral Society. Until 1985, she was the accompanist
for the Huddersfield Glee and Madrigal Society. For the past four
years she has been the pianist for the C.H.A. (Countrywide Holiday
Association) 'Singing for Pleasure' courses run by' Ken Rothery, involving
singers from all over the country.
She was proud and delighted to accompany Brian Kay who was guest soloist
at the Youth Choir's Concert in the Town Hall in February 1988. She
regularly accompanies local soloists, enjoying particularly recital
work.
Beth Sharp works for the Calderdale Education Authority, teaching
music in four schools in the Halifax area, but is perhaps best known
as conductor of the Huddersfield Choral Society Children's Choir,
details of which are given later in this programme.
Her likes, as well as music making, include gardening, flower arranging,
walking - particularly in the Holme Valley - and people! Dislikes
are litter and form filling!
Sadly Beth died in 1996. |
